One wonders whether the Telugu Desam Party is campaigning against consumption of liquor or reduction of liquor prices so as to make people consume more liquor. And going by the incidents, the latter seems to be the TDP’s priority.
On Monday, TDP legislator from West Godvari Chintamaneni Prabhakar, along with his followers and party workers demonstrated before the liquor outlets in Eluru town in protest against the sale of liquor at a higher price than the maximum retail price. And in order to get the “josh,” the MLA and his men consumed liquor in public and attacked the shops. They destroyed liquor bottles alleging that the shops were selling them at higher prices. The MLA demanded that the shops should not sell liquor more than the MRP.
As the news flashed in the electronic media, Prabhakar gave a clarification saying he did not consume liquor in public.
“It was just a bottle of cold drink. We wanted to make a symbolic protest by consuming cold drink. It was not liquor,” he clarified.
Interestingly, the liquor mafia continues to sell the booze at higher price despite the recent ACB raids and strict instructions from Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s strict instructions to the excise department to enforce the MRP. The Excise department also issued a statement saying the enforcement wing launched a crackdown on the liquor shops in all the districts to see that the liquor brands were sold at MRP with immediate effect.
