Kandula reluctantly agreed to contest against Jagan and the state party leaders hastily announced his name. But he developed cold feet in the last moment and put a condition that he would contest the by-elections only if the party gives him a commitment that he would be sent to the Rajya Sabha in the event of losing the by-polls.
The Congress high command was angry with this condition and asked Kandula to get last. Having no other option, the Chief Minister convinced Health Minister D L Ravindra Reddy to contest against Jagan late on Thursday night.
Interestingly, Kandula put forward a similar proposal for Rajya Sabha seat before TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, but he, too, was not willing to give any such commitment. As a result, he along with his brother Sivananda Reddy switched loyalties to the Congress on Thursday morning.
