Notwithstanding loud protests from within the Telugu Desam Party against the selection of candidates for Rajya Sabha elections, party president N Chandrababu Naidu stuck to his adamant stand in selecting his close associate Y S Chowdary of Sujana Group of Industries, popularly known as Sujana Chowdary.
The TDP president finalised the names of Sujana Chowdary and also Gundu Sudharani, a hotelier in Warangal, for the two RS seats. Though Naidu thought of fielding former home minister T Devender Goud in place of Sudha Rani in the BC and Telangana quota, the latter dropped out in the last minute due to stiff opposition from other Telangana leaders because he had come back to the party only recently. Chowdary and Sudha Rani would be filing their nominations on Friday, the last day for the same.
Naidus choice obviously led to severe criticisim from the party leaders. Former Kovvur MLA Krishna Babu described the selection of Sujana Chowdary as nothing short of selling party tickets. How can Naidu select Chowdary, against whom there are several allegations of financial irregularities? he asked.
Another BC leader and Naidus supporter Varla Ramaiah also expressed regrets over the selection of industrialists for the RS ticket. Already there is an industrialist who is representing party in Lok Sabha. Why should another person of the same caste be given RS ticket? he asked.
