The veteran Telangana Congress leader and Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy is caught in a fix. There is a growing pressure on him to quit the central cabinet and join the statehood movement. Because of his stature and the respect he commands in Delhi circles, his resignation will have a desired effect on the Centre, it is argued.
Besides, Jaipal is the only cabinet rank minister from Telangana region. A delegation of Telangana Congress MPs, State Ministers and MLAs called on Jaipal at his residence in Hyderabad on Sunday and appealed to him to put pressure on the Centre on Telangana issue. The best course for him would be to quit the cabinet post and take a plunge into the movement, the delegation told him.
Jaipals leadership would give a boost to the Telangana agitation, they said. Though Jaipal is a supporter of Telangana cause, he has not been very vocal about it in public. He is believed to have told the delegation that formation of Telangana state was inevitable. However, he did not give any commitment on quitting the central cabinet to mount pressure on the Centre to grant statehood.
