The simmering war of one-upmanship between two powerful communities Kapus and Kammas has once again come to the fore in Guntur district with the controversial comments made by Kamma leader and Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao.
Rayapati made it clear that his comments against corrupt ministers in the Rosaiah cabinet were specifically aimed at his district minister Kanna Laksminarayana. This has angered the Kapu sections in the district, who are now demanding that action be taken against the MP. The rivalry between Rayapati group and my group have been there for the last two decades. But, I have never made any complaints against Rayapati openly and if at all there were any differences, I used to raise them in the party meetings. It is unfortunate that Rayapati has chosen to make wild and baseless allegations against me, just to malign my image and gain upper hand in the district politics, Kanna told the media.
In several places in the district, Kanna group burnt the effigies of Rayapati and demanded that he withdraw his comments. I have declared my assets before the Assembly speaker as well as the Election Commission. Let Rayapati prove his charges that I have become corrupt like Madhu Koda, he said, adding that he would take up the matter with the Congress high command and demand action against the MP. Rayapatis grouse is that the Kamma group is being gradually sidelined in the Congress and except Daggubati Purandareshwari who had her own clout in the high command, no Kamma leader got a good position in the party. He is of the view that in the wake of Chiranjeevis Praja Rajyam Party, the party is pampering only Kapus. Hence, this outburst.
